I really like Matt Byers’ mindset. He’s open to change. He’s not content to rest on his laurels, the usual blah about combat-tested, Sifu Bupkis beat 3 guys in a back alley, the art started 2,000 years ago in the mist-enshrouded peaks of the Himalayas, etc. He sees holes in the system (How do I enter when he’s punching? Do my techniques work when he’s trying to jack my jaw at every opportunity?). He trains by having a partner put on boxing gloves, then he works his jiu-jitsu techniques.
What is especially valuable is his real-life experience at 8:00. He goes to guard feeling confident, but he’s on the ground in a bar and there are multiple opponents.
Below we see how he modifies an arm-drag so that it is less vulnerable against a punching opponent.
