I recently bought an e-book on using the cane for self-defense. I figured I owed it to myself and to my readers to see what is out there. I also reasoned that even if I got just one technique out of it, then the purchase was worthwhile.
Well, the author starts out with a fistload, which means punching with your fist while holding the stick. A fistload is typically used with a very short weapon, like a mini flashlight or a roll of quarters, because these weapons are too short to strike like a stick. Using a long stick as a fistload makes no sense to me.
Then he goes into the rap, which is a quick, short-range strike with the stick. It’s not a death blow, so the aim is to "pop" the opponent, creating a gap that you can then follow up to strike more powerfully or to move out. I believe it is always best to use two hands when possible, and the rap is no exception.
