I’ve been looking at cane videos lately, and there’s a lot of garbage out there, so I was pleased to see this video by Chris Hodges of Gary Hernandez Martial Arts. Because Chris has a disability, he serves as an accurate check on what is realistic cane defense. The video is slow, without a whole lot of bells and whistles, but the material is solid.
I like that Chris has a very clear strategy and tactics–don’t wrestle, move to the outside, hit and run, establish control and then get out.
At 3:50 he gets into his first technique. He stresses the move to the outside, pointing out that on the inside it’s too easy for his attacker to grab the cane.
I like the 2-handed strike at 6:15.
At 7:00 I would grasp the cane with my left hand palm-inward. You really need to train this not as a grab, but as a grab-and-hit.
