Real-Life Combat: Granny with Guitar Hero Controller

Granny Does Big Stick Combat

Granny Does Big Stick Combat

I’d like to thank reader Dean for alerting me to this article. A grandmother in Indiana was awakened by three intruders crashing through her front door. Fearing for the safety of her young grandson, she sprang into action, grabbing the replica guitar controller for the “Guitar Hero” video game.

She picked up the plastic guitar and began whacking the three young punks with it, chasing them out the front door.

As reader Michael said in his response to the previous post, the sort of real-world weapon you will find lying around and use to defend yourself is often going to be very cumbersome. But part of how awkward that weapon is depends upon your technique. If you’re used to twirling the nunchaku, and doing wrist rolls and behind-the-back, over-the-shoulder passes, you may find the chain and padlock cumbersome, and the velvet rope with the weighted end at a Chuck E. Cheese or a nightclub will feel awkward. But if you train striking with power in direct lines, these weapons become easier to use.

What kali/eskrima/arnis technique would you use with a Guitar Hero controller? There isn’t one. But this lady instinctively understood that the replica guitar was a 2-handed weapon, and successfully used it. If you know Big Stick Combat, you can pick up the Guitar Hero controller (which I had never imagined as a weapon) or a fireplace poker, or a hammer, and use it as a weapon.
