In just a moment I’m going to discuss GM Velez’s disarming technique, but let me start by asking for your help for the ailing grandmaster, who has medical problems. You can buy a cool Balintawak shirt here, or donate directly to his medical fund.
In the video above, GM Velez demonstrates several disarms following a Doug Marcaida Seminar. (Holy crap! What a day that must have been.) The first couple of disarms are standard, so you might be tempted to move onto the next video, but at 1:00 things get interesting.
Against a #2, or high backhand strike, GM Velez ends with a two-handed grip. This makes a lot of sense because the two-handed grip allows him to apply a great deal of power against the opponent’s weapon arm, but it also prepares him to fight if the opponent tries to close.
At 1:30 check out the two-handed rifle grip versus a #3, forehand horizontal strike.
At 2:00 he ducks under a high horizontal and closes with a two-handed choke.
At 2:20 there’s a cool move, a strike to the groin as he angles behind the opponent.
At 2:40 there’s an interesting trapping chain of moves ending with a thrust to the armpit.
At 3:00 he goes into another trapping chain, and in these next couple of disarms he often ends with a clinch takedown holding the stick in rifle grip.
