Knockout Attacks, continued

Recently attention has been focused on the knockout “game,” in which black youths try to knockout an unsuspecting bystander with a single punch. I have written about this previously here and here. The video above is just one such incident, with a second incident embedded in the story.

In the feel good story of the year, one of these attackers was shot by a concealed carry permit holder! But it’s easy to get fooled by this story, especially when coupled with the fact that these attacks tend to occur in areas where citizens can’t legally carry guns. Because if you’re thinking you’re going to draw your concealed pistol from under several layers of clothing to defend yourself against a completely unprovoked, unannounced attack at close range, you’re kidding yourself. This is not an argument against concealed carry, but a statement of reality

These are keys that you need to prevent these types of attacks and defend yourself against them:

1) Strategic Awareness. As I have written earlier, the media is reluctant to mention any racial angle. Instead, these stories are written as amorphous “youths” assaulting random victims, when in actuality black youths are targeting white, Jewish, and Asian victims. The first step is to be aware of this reality

ko2. Tactical Awareness. I don’t like saying this, but you must go on high alert in the presence of black teens, especially in urban areas. Sadly, if you are in an area with a very high percentage of Obama voters, you are in danger. Because nobody in these knockout attacks will confront you to challenge you, or demand your wallet, you must anticipate the attack before it happens –and it will happen in an instant.

I’ve seen video of victims being knocked out from behind, so it’s not enough to scan the street ahead of you. You must maintain 360 degree situational awareness.

3. Create Distance. If need be, cross the street to avoid black teens. (If that sounds ugly, even Al Sharpton has acknowledged that the black community has a problem.) In video of several knockout attacks, the future victim passes very closely to the assailant. You must create a gap so that a potential assailant must at least step toward you to come within striking range. That step gives you some warning that an assault may be underway.

4. Practice Instinctive Defense. You should train an instinctive defense that is useful against multiple types of attacks, and train to the point that you could execute the defense even if you were lying in a hospital bed with no detectable brain activity. Ideally, you will have successfully defended yourself against a surprise attack before you even realize what’s happening.

5. Pre-Stage. It’s a good idea in a high-alert situation to get a hand up, say to scratch your head,Knockout-340x171 adjust your hat or glasses, comb your hair, and so on. The hand up may just deter a sucker punch because you’re not offering a clean shot. It’s better to have your hand already up (pre-staging) than to try to bring it up as a sucker punch is hurtling toward your face.

It’s also a good idea to have your low-key weapon already in your hand (pre-staging) than to try to draw it under stress. I like to carry my low-profile weapon, such as a water bottle that I intend to throw, in my off/weak hand so that I can draw a weapon or strike with my strong hand.
